Line—[which is] Gego’s prime expressive tool, in her works on paper and her three-dimensional compositions—was always on her mind. This text was written in English, possibly during one of her visits to the United States in the 1960s. During that phase in her career Gego was producing vast quantities of works on paper, both drawings and prints. The most important aspect of this document concerns Gego’s thoughts on different applications and meanings of the line; especially since they are expressed by an artist who is also an architect-engineer by training. In closing, her mention of line as something to be played with, suggested that it was her choice among the options identified, and explains the playfulness that many experts see in Gego’s work. Gego’s thoughts on line can also be found in: “Relaciones de líneas” [Relationships of Lines], s/f; “You Invited Me,” 1966; “Statement,” 1970; and “Planteamiento de problemas e intereses perseguidos” [A Consideration of Problems and Matters of Interest], 1977. This document is part of the artist’s personal papers that are archived at the Fundación Gego in Caracas, Venezuela. It was assembled by Gego and filed with other texts under the title: “Sabiduras.” It was reprinted in María Elena Huizi and Josefina Manrique (organizers), Sabiduras y otros textos de Gego / Sabiduras and Other Texts by Gego (Houston: International Center for the Arts of the Americas, The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and Fundación Gego, 2005).
