The three components of the ICAA Documents Project are as follows:
The ICAA Documents Project began with a staggered, six-year recovery phase leading to the compilation of the primary sources that make up the core of this Internet-based digital archive. To recover primary sources, the ICAA organized ten research teams in the United States and Latin America that operated under the umbrella of their respective partner institutions. In turn, these teams analyzed the ICAA Documents Project’s Editorial Framework to chart out research objectives and work plans specific to the countries or communities in which they were active. The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, served as the organizing and host institution for the entire project.
São Paulo–based Base7, a website design and development team, conceived an innovative digital database that serves as the virtual archive and search engine for the ICAA Documents Project. This archive reflects the findings of an initial seven-year recovery phase as well as future research phases. It is now accessible to the research and academic community as well as to general users worldwide via the Internet.
In addition to digitizing artists’ writings and other essential texts by critics and curators, the end product of the ICAA Documents Project includes a series of fully annotated book anthologies published in English by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and distributed by Yale University Press. The series introduces and delineates new areas of analytical research that explore how artists from different countries and/or communities articulated the intellectual foundation of artistic production. This open-ended framework serves the teaching and research needs of both the academic and professional communities in the United States, Europe, and Latin America, leading to a redefinition of the current map of Latin American/Latino art.
