The editorial categories are research topics that have guided researchers during the recovery phase and continue to be the impetus behind the Documents Project’s digital archive and the Critical Documents book series. Developed by the project’s Editorial Board, each of the teams analyzed this framework and adapted it to their local contexts in developing their research objectives and work plans during the Recovery Phase. Helen V. Tooker, the reporter from El mundo [The World] newspaper, discusses the reactions expressed by Ricardo Alegría, the director of the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueño [ICP, Puerto Rican Cultural Institute] concerning the success of the 1957 Puerto Rican art exhibition at the Riverside Museum in New York. Referring to a particular review—which elicited protests from Island artists for suggesting that art is a recent phenomenon in Puerto Rico—Alegría said that this sort of comment should not detract from the success of the exhibition. This success was borne out by the interest shown by many foundations in offering grants to some of the artists, and by the many invitations the artists received to banquets, museums, and art centers. Tooker quoted extensively from a favorable review written by Emily Genauer, the art critic at the New York Tribune. “What is particularly interesting” Genauer is quoted as saying, “is that, across the spectrum of their various styles, the artists have preserved a strong regional flavor.”
This exhibition was reviewed by the following members of the New York press: Dore Ashton, New York Times; Emily Genauer, New York Tribune; Charles Warner, New York Sunday News; and Robert M. Coates, The New Yorker magazine. Considerable controversy and bad feelings were stirred up among the artists by the specific comments of one of the above mentioned critics.
