This is a review of a lecture given by Juan Zocchi, director of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, during the exhibition, De Manet a nuestros días [From Manet to Our Times]. Rather than defend or attack abstract art, Zocchi indicates his interest in tracing the process by which Abstract art came into being.
Juan Zocchi, an Argentine writer and art critic, became the director of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in 1947, during the first presidency of Juan Domingo Perón (1946–55). He was then named head of the Departamento de Artes Plásticas of the Ministry of Education. He participated in the creation of the Instituto de Arte of the Universidad Nacional del Litoral (Rosario).The Guía Quincenal de la Actividad Intelectual y Artística Argentina [Biweekly Guide to Intellectual and Artistic Events in Argentina] was an official publication that started in 1947 and produced by the Comisión Nacional de Cultura under Juan Domingo Perón (1895–1974). It was distributed free of charge at schools, libraries, and other cultural institutions.The exhibition, De Manet a nuestros días, was held at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in 1949, at almost the same time as the exhibition, Del arte figurativo al arte abstracto [From Figurative to Abstract Art], which Léon Degand organized at the Instituto de Arte Moderno. Both exhibitions stirred up the debate surrounding Abstract art in Argentina.This text has been selected because it offers evidence of what the director of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes thought about abstract art. Of particular interest is his belief that the term “abstract” was not befitting the works in this exhibition, which he instead deemed Symbolist in nature.
