The editorial categories are research topics that have guided researchers during the recovery phase and continue to be the impetus behind the Documents Project’s digital archive and the Critical Documents book series. Developed by the project’s Editorial Board, each of the teams analyzed this framework and adapted it to their local contexts in developing their research objectives and work plans during the Recovery Phase. The nationalist manifesto produced by the Verde-Amarelismo movement (named for Brazil’s national colors) is based on a goal of collective behavior inspired by the indigenous symbolism of the “anta” (the tapir), a creature that “makes its way through the forest” looking neither to left nor right, a custom that the Tupí-Guaraní culture interprets as “the absence of prejudice.” The movement thus makes it clear that the type of nationalism they advocate is subjective, sentimental, and religious.
The signatories to the manifesto call on their generation to “produce with no discussion” and encourage everyone to be whoever they choose to be. They say they are “tired of Europe” and are willing to accept Brazil’s conservative institutions, confident that they can achieve “the renewal” of the country from within.
The well-known poet, journalist, and painter Menotti del Picchia (1892–1988) was a beneficiary of, but not always in step with, the boost to Brazilian art and literature provided by the so-called Brazilian “modernism” of the 1920s.
