This document reports on “El anarquismo en la sociedad capitalista" [Anarchism in a Capitalist Society], the lecture given by Herbert Read at the offices of the Federación Libertaria Argentina [Libertarian Federation of Argentina] in Buenos Aires on June 29, 1962.
In 1962, on the occasion of the 1st Latin American Art Biennial in Córdoba, Herbert Read, the English art critic, traveled to Argentina to act as presiding judge of the jury that was assembled to officiate at the contest. While he was in Buenos Aires he gave a lecture at the Federación Libertaria Argentina on the subject of “El anarquismo en la sociedad capitalista" [Anarchism in a Capitalist Society], and went to the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes to see the Torcato Di Tella Collection. This document refers to Herbert Read’s versatility and to his overall stature in the art world. His reputation, in fact, was in line with one of the requirements stipulated by the members of the Latin American Art Biennial’s organizing committee, who thought it essential to ensure that the jury included at least one member with the necessary international credentials to provide the contest with the desired relevance in worldwide art circles.
