This article reviews the Marcelo Pombo and Miguel Harte exhibition held at the ICI (Instituto de Cooperación Iberoamericana) del Centro Cultural de España during the months of April and May 1991. It describes the characteristics of the works of each of the artists and declares that in relation to the exhibitions these artists co-presented with Pablo Suárez in 1989 at the Centro Cultural Ricardo Rojas; in 1990 at the Centro Cultural Recoleta; and also in relation to the works of both these artists that were included in the show Menor o igual a Treinta Años. Muestra de Artistas Jóvenes [Thirty Years or Younger: A Show of Young Artists] organized by the Fundación Banco Patricios in 1991, the works exhibited at the ICI “are the result of an upward trend in the work of the two artists.”


Both Marcelo Pombo (b. 1959) and Miguel Harte were part of what came to be known as “el grupo de el Rojas,” that is, those artists that the Galería del Centro Cultural Ricardo Rojas brought together between 1989 and the early 1990s. Although it was a marginal space at the time, the center began to take on importance within the Buenos Aires art scene between 1991 and 1992, and its artists began to be incorporated into presentations at key exhibition spaces, such as the ICI (Instituto de Cooperación Iberoamericana) del Centro Cultural de España, and the Galería Ruth Benzacar, just as this article demonstrates. References to art trends of the past—such as pop art, minimalism, Concrete Art (in the most personal of reformulations), as well as elements of Kitsch—have served to characterize the expressive styles of these artists, who towards the end of the decade generally came to be known as the representatives of “Argentine art in the 1990s.” The ICI opened in 1988. Laura Buccellato served as its curatorial director; she is now the director of the Museo de Arte Moderno in Buenos Aires.
