This article explains what caused the publication Inicial to be divided, the result of “ideological and sentimental” divergences that compelled the resignation of three of the founders so that, in essence, “with this edition, INICIAL [sic] is beginning a new phase.” With this new edition, Inicial “hopes to capture in the Academy the latent energy of an orphan generation of voices … [and that] it aspires to be the perfect platform for the young—liberated from the neglectful shackles, the comfortable success, and an environment of complicity.” In contrast, Inicial affirmed that all it demanded would be “a selfless fervor for the spiritual life.” After this pivotal mission statement, the publication went through an extensive historical evaluation that permitted it to ultimately presage “an uninterrupted series of catastrophes” due to the “problematic situation [in which we find] the world”—an argument which, given the discontent that it embodied, Inicial sought to foment in the academy.


Inicial. Revista de la nueva generación made its debut on the Buenos Aires cultural scene in October 1923, publishing a total of eleven editions until November 1926, when it ceased publication. The editorial board comprised Roberto A. Ortelli, Alfredo Brandán Caraffa, Homero Guglielmini, and Roberto Smith. In 1924, this group split, and, as it happened, two No. 5 editions of the magazine were published, corresponding to the two groups that remained after the schism of the original editorial team. The No. 5 from the month of April 1924, from which the document presented here was taken, corresponds to the group formed by Roberto O. Ortelli, Brandán Caraffa, Luis E. Soto, Roberto Cugini, and Raúl González Tuñón.
