    Synopsis

    In this interview, curator Denise Mattar asks Alberto Teixeira about the beginnings of his artistic career, his transition from figurative to abstract painting, and his use of the colors red and green. Teixeira, who was born in Portugal, studied at the National Society of Fine Arts in Lisbon. It was there that he first exhibited his work, before traveling to Madrid and Paris, where he had “the first great revelations” of his career as a painter. He later moved to São Paulo to study with Samson Flexor, under whose influence he became “more interested in the relation of planes, colors and values ??to each other than in their relation to any figure or object. And without realizing it, I was doing abstractionism.” Despite this important breakthrough, Teixeira sought “more room for emotion, for lyricism and for psychological expression,” which he ultimately found in the art informel of the Paris-based painters Tapies, Appel and Sugai. Teixeira describes his preoccupation with the colors red and green in these terms; as opposite and complementary colors, they contain “expressively power to translate the drama of the intrinsic duality of the human universe, which coexists with a form of art characterized principally by psychological values.”

    The Portuguese artist Alberto Teixeira (1925–2011) studied drawing and painting at the National Society of Fine Arts in Lisbon. In 1950, he moved to São Paulo, where he took classes with Samson Flexor (1907–71) and joined his Atelier-Abstração, a studio that taught the principles of abstraction, held recitals and conferences, and served as a hub for artists and intellectuals such as Tarsila do Amaral, Lasar Segall, Anatol Wladyslaw, and André Lhote. Teixeira describes the scene that revolved around Flexor’s studio on Vila Mariana, where he met such figures as Sérgio Milliet and Mário Schenberg.
