Thanks to a generous donation from Olive McCollum Jenney—a member of the Latin American Subcommittee of the MFAH—, the ICAA recently established a research team at the Museo Municipal Juan Manuel Blanes in Montevideo. Uruguay was a key area of artistic activity for us that had not been included in the first phase of the Documents Project’s recovery effort. Our team at Fundación Espigas in Buenos Aires had sent us an important cache of documents by Uruguayan artists as part of their own recovery; however, underlying their selection was a justifiable connection to the Argentinean avant-garde at the core of their research. We were aware of this evident lacuna in our holdings and the idea of a full recovery project in Uruguay was very much on our minds when, fortuitously, the plan and budget for such team crystallized in 2012 thanks to Ms. Jenney’s support. Led by Gabriel Peluffo Linari, an architect and long-time director of the museum, the team in Montevideo began operations in January of 2013 and will continue to recover materials through August of 2014. We look forward to building on the intellectual legacy of the Uruguayan avant-garde through materials that will be made available on our digital archive at the conclusion of our recovery operation in Montevideo.
