This December, the ICAA celebrates the 115th birthday of Cuban artist Wifredo Lam (Dec. 8, 1902–Sep. 11, 1982). Considered a pioneer of modern art, Lam’s role as an artist within the Modernist movement is recognized by critics and art historians. His work transitioned from his early artistic formation, to the influence of Picasso and surrealism, to the Modernist movement. Lam is seen as having portrayed the Afro-Cuban spirit, culture and identity and their relationship to Cuban artistic production. He was a prolific artist, as his oeuvre includes paintings, sculpture, ceramics, and printmaking. Our readers can find out more about this artist at the ICAA digital archive.
