During this month, the ICAA celebrates the 95th birthday of Venezuelan artist Jesús Rafael Soto (b. Ciudad Bolívar, June 5, 1923). As a key figure of the Venezuelan Kinetic art movement, Soto sought to achieve pure abstraction by introducing new mechanisms such as optical vibration, dynamics of subject matter, and the physical relationships between the components of his work. He also thought of viewers as an essential element of his work because the connections within the work’s components could only be appreciated if a viewer were present. This is especially true in the case of Soto’s Penetrables series, of which the MFAH boasts Houston Penetrable (2004–2014).

During this month, the ICAA celebrates the 85th birthday of Argentinean artist Luis Felipe Noé (b. Buenos Aires, May 26, 1933). Noé was part of a group of artists who first showed together in the exhibition Otra Figuración [Another Figuration] at Galería Peuser in Buenos Aires, 1961. During this month, the ICAA celebrates the 115th anniversary of the birthday of Mexican photographer Dolores [Lola] Álvarez Bravo (April 03, 1903 – July 31, 1993). Aside from photographing a wide variety of subjects, and producing documentary images and photomontages, she is also known for her portraits of political leaders and other well-known Mexican artists (such as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera). Over the course of her long career in the arts, Álvarez Bravo was also a photojournalist, commercial photographer, professional portraitist, teacher, and gallery owner and curator. In addition, Álvarez Bravo served as Chief Photographer for the magazine El Maestro Rural (published in the 1930s by Mexico’s Secretariat of Public Education); as Director of Photography at Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura (1940s); and as an activist with the Liga de Escritores y Artistas Revolucionarios [League of Revolutionary Writers and Artists] (LEAR)....

During this month, the ICAA celebrates the 105th anniversary of the birthday of Uruguayan artist Carmelo Arden Quin (March 16, 1913–September 27, 2010). One of the most recognized artists to emerge in Latin America during the 1930s, the Uruguayan artist Carmelo Arden Quin founded, with Argentinean artist Gyula Kosice, the Madí movement in 1946. Arden Quin encouraged the use of non-orthogonal frames, advocating that each type of art be conceived in its physical and pure nature. In 1948, Arden Quin settled in Paris, where he would spend most of his lifetime. During this month, the ICAA celebrates the anniversary of three significant Brazilian artists during the 1950s, 60s and 70s:

On February 01, we celebrate the 80th anniversary of Spanish-born Brazilian artist, printmaker, and author Julio Plaza (February 01, 1938–June 17, 2003). Born and raised in Madrid, Julio Plaza arrived in Brazil in 1967, as part of a group of artists representing Spain at the IX Bienal Internacional de São Paulo. Plaza settled permanently in São Paulo in 1973, where he became involved with key figures of the concrete art movement in the country, such as Augusto de Campos (with whom he co-created the artist book Julio Plaza—Objetos, 1968–69). In the 1970s, Plaza embraced an interdisciplinary approach to his artistic practice, producing multimedia works that involved video, computer graphics, holographs, photography, and graphic arts. The Documents Project website launched on January 20, 2012 after ten years of quiet, behind-the-scenes work at the International Center for the Arts of the Americas (ICAA). Back then, 2,500 documents from Argentina, Mexico, and the American Midwest (University of Notre Dame) were available for research on our site. The uploading of documents from our teams in the United States, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Brazil, Venezuela, Peru, and Uruguay followed over the years.

These materials have been complemented by the central administration team in Houston, in its dimension as a research team. We have recently added a significant cache of texts that appeared in Perceptismo: Teórico y polémico, and other rare Argentinean periodicals. And, we also expanded our online selection of archival documents from The Adolpho Leirner Collection of Brazilian Constructive Art at The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston....

Houston, TX, December 13, 2017 – The ICAA is pleased to announce that Giovanna Bassi Cendra and Margaret H. Adams are the most recent winners of the Peter C. Marzio Award for Outstanding Research in 20th-Century Latin American and Latino Art. Named for the late, longtime director of the MFAH, who founded the ICAA in 2001, the award recognizes new scholarship in the field of 20th-century Latin American and Latino art.

This December, the ICAA celebrates the 115th birthday of Cuban artist Wifredo Lam (Dec. 8, 1902–Sep. 11, 1982). Considered a pioneer of modern art, Lam’s role as an artist within the Modernist movement is recognized by critics and art historians. His work transitioned from his early artistic formation, to the influence of Picasso and surrealism, to the Modernist movement. Lam is seen as having portrayed the Afro-Cuban spirit, culture and identity and their relationship to Cuban artistic production. He was a prolific artist, as his oeuvre includes paintings, sculpture, ceramics, and printmaking. Our readers can find out more about this artist at the ICAA digital archive

This November, the ICAA celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Task Force on Hispanic American Arts, presented in Washington, D.C., on November 12, 1977 [ICAA Record ID 782361]. In this gathering, a Panel on Hispanic-Americans and the Arts went before the National Council in the Arts with recommendations that sought to respond to the question, "What more can the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) do to assist and strengthen Hispanic Arts in the U.S.?"

Among the recommendations cited by the Panel are the inclusion of Hispanics, their values, and viewpoints at all levels of the NEA, and increased participation in the granting process by improved communication, broad dissemination of information, and preservation of cultural heritage. These recommendations were later adopted as a resolution by the Task Force on Hispanic-American Arts in Los Angeles on March 16, 1978. Members of the Task...

Establishing the first and largest European and Latin American Art Collection in South America: 70th anniversary of MASP

Founded in 1947, the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP) was developed by the journalist and famous media entrepreneur Assis Chateaubriand. Chateaubriand, who owned the largest media network in Brazil, envisioned a project that would help to modernize São Paulo culture at a time that its boom was fueled by several industries including the coffee business. At that time, there was only one official art center in São Paulo, the Pinacoteca do Estado, which was exclusively dedicated to academic art. Having this in mind Chateaubriand invited the Italian gallerist and art critic Pietro Maria Bardi  as well as his wife, the architect Lina Bo Bardi to offer their guidance concerning the art collection as well with the museological and museographical strategies for the upcoming art space. Together, they developed a ground-breaking pedagogical model with a focus on the education of the general public...
